Alleghany Regional Jail Overview
Alleghany Regional Jail is operated through the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office and Regional Jail in downtown Covington. It is the only detention facility mapped for this Bath County build. The facility serves local and regional jail custody, including Bath County defendants who are transported for Bath County court proceedings. It is not a VADOC state prison, a BOP federal prison, or an ICE detention center.
The official corrections page identifies Major Ray Keen as jail coordinator and jail administrator. Official capacity was not located in the official jail pages reviewed. A non-official local news account discussed crowding once the jail reaches 126 occupants, but that was not treated as an official rated capacity. The State Board of Local and Regional Jails CY 2024 annual report lists Alleghany Regional Jail as inspected in June and compliant.
Alleghany Regional Jail Contact
For current custody, call the jail before relying on any online source. Bath County's sheriff can answer Bath County law-enforcement questions, but the jail is the direct source for current regional custody, visit eligibility, intake timing, phone rules, and property rules.

Lookup Alleghany Regional Jail Custody
The inspected official inmate-information page says users can search to see if an individual is incarcerated, but the visible linked search resource pointed to the VADOC offender locator rather than a verified local roster profile. For Bath County defendants, the current-custody lookup is therefore a phone-first process.
- Call Alleghany Regional Jail at 540-965-1776 and ask whether the person is currently in local or regional custody.
- Ask whether booking is complete if the person was just brought in by law enforcement or from court.
- Use the VADOC locator only when the person may be in state custody, supervision, a VADOC-authority jail placement, or CCAP.
- Use Virginia VINE or VINELink for custody-status notification.
- Use BOP or ICE locators only when a federal sentence or immigration detention is involved.
The Bath County inmate records page compares the full custody-search chain for local, state, federal, and immigration systems.
Alleghany Regional Jail Population
Official facility-specific population and rated-capacity figures were not located in the accessible official jail pages reviewed. The strongest official data point for facility oversight is the CY 2024 State Board of Local and Regional Jails annual report, which lists Alleghany Regional Jail as inspected in June and compliant. Statewide Virginia local and regional jail ADP was 20,307 in the FY 2024 Jail Cost Report, but that is not a facility count.
Alleghany Regional Jail Visitation
Alleghany Regional Jail uses video visitation materials tied to Pay Tel, HomeWAV, and inteleVISIT. Off-site video visitation is listed as available daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. On-site video visitation must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. The web page and an older PDF differ on exact on-site hours, so visitors should call before traveling.
| Visit type | Schedule or rule | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Off-site video | Daily 9 a.m.-10 p.m. | Pay Tel / HomeWAV / Pay Tel Connect |
| On-site video | Official page: Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 9 a.m.-10 p.m. | Schedule at least 24 hours ahead. |
| PDF on-site windows | Tue-Thu 1-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-8 p.m.; Sat 1-4 p.m.; Sun 1-5 p.m. | Confirm which schedule is current. |

| Professional visits | By request | Attorneys, probation/parole, clergy, social workers, doctors, psychiatrists, or psychologists may request confidential visits. |
The official Alleghany Regional Jail inmate-information page is the source for these service rules.
Because the on-site schedule has conflicting official presentations, the jail phone line should be used before a visitor drives to Covington.
Alleghany Regional Jail Mail
The mail policy uses Facility ID 5004 and sends approved mail to inmate tablets after scanning. Physical mail is destroyed after scanning. The policy allows written or typed pages, photos, drawings, and greeting cards within the page limit, but it excludes many physical items and content categories.
| Mail rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Facility ID | 5004 |
| Page limit | 10 pages or less per envelope, no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches |
| Allowed material | Written or typed pages, photos, drawings, and greeting cards, except prohibited types |
| Prohibited items | Cash, checks, money orders to the processing center, Polaroids, glitter, glue, tape, publications, packages, contraband, and original important documents |
| Released-inmate digital copies | Request by emailing todd.tyler@co.alleghany.va.us with facility ID, full name, inmate ID number, and email address |
Alleghany Regional Jail Money
The official money sources conflict on vendor names. A September 2024 money sheet lists a lobby kiosk, Access Corrections website, and phone deposits at 1-866-345-1884. The inmate page also references money orders by mail and says the business-office window does not accept money. A later official news item says the jail transitioned to OASIS Commissary and has a fully operational 24/7 lobby ATM and online funding platform.
| Method | Published access | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby kiosk or ATM | Jail lobby; later OASIS post says 24/7 lobby ATM | Fees and vendor rules apply. |
| Website | Access Corrections, JailATM, and OASIS appear in official materials | Confirm current vendor before sending funds. |
| Phone | 1-866-345-1884 in one PDF; other official materials list 877-810-0914 | Confirm current number. |
| Money order by mail | USPS money order to 268 West Main Street is referenced | Do not include personal letters or cards with a money order. |
The official Alleghany Regional Jail commissary update documents the OASIS transition and lobby funding option.
Use the jail phone line before sending funds if the person was just booked or if the vendor name on a form conflicts with another official page.
Alleghany Regional Jail Phone Rules
Inmates have phone access daily after housing areas are cleaned, and phones are turned off at 11 p.m. The jail does not accept incoming calls for inmates and does not deliver routine messages. Emergency messages, such as a death in the family, are the exception described in the public rules.
Property rules are narrow. The official page says the only items that may be brought to an inmate are cash or money orders, prescription medication in the original container cleared by medical staff, and one set of clothing for Circuit Court jury trials only. Medication must be cleared by jail medical staff.
Alleghany Regional Jail Booking
A Bath County defendant may arrive from arrest, warrant service, or court transport. Jail staff then receive the person, confirm identity, complete intake, screen property, address medical issues, classify housing, and activate jail systems. The money instructions provide a practical timing clue: when someone is just brought in by law enforcement or court, allow at least one hour before trying to leave money, and longer if intake is busy.
Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, and money-vendor status with the jail before traveling or sending funds.
